    Causes of Refractive Errors

    Last updated 2 months ago

Blurry vision sends many people to the doctor for prescription glasses and contacts. There are several different eye abnormalities that can cause vision to blur; the good news is that they can usually be corrected with glasses and contacts.

This video covers the most common causes of blurry vision, all of which impact the eye’s ability to create a focus point on the retina. Eye size can cause nearsightedness and farsightedness, while a problem with the shape of the cornea causes astigmatism. Each of these translate into blurry vision.

In this video, you’ll find out that the old notion of choosing a pair of glasses that contrasts with your facial shape is out the window. Opt for glasses with strong angles if your face has strong bone structure, or contoured rounded glasses if you have a round face.

What are Some Common Eye Problems in Children?

    Last updated 3 months ago

Children may suffer from a variety of common eye conditions. Many of these conditions require minor treatment or prescription eyewear to restore normal vision. Taking your child for regular eye exams can catch these problems early so that they can be treated effectively, which helps you cultivate clear vision and healthy eyes for a lifetime.

    Astigmatism

Astigmatism occurs when the cornea of the eye has a shape that deviates from normal. This causes blurred vision because light is not focused properly onto the retina of the eye. Astigmatism can be treated with prescription eyeglasses or contact lenses in older children.

    Myopia and Hyperopia

Myopia and hyperopia occur when light is focused either in front of or behind the retina, creating trouble seeing clearly either at a distance or up close. Myopia may increase in severity throughout the childhood and teenage years, and can be corrected with prescription eyeglasses. In many cases, hyperopia does not interfere with normal vision and may not require corrective lenses.

    Misaligned Eyes

Misaligned eyes are eyes that do not face the same direction at the same time. Infants will not grow out of this condition, and it is important to have it diagnosed by a pediatrician or during an eye exam to begin treatment. If left unaddressed, depth perception or vision in one eye may be permanently lost. This condition can be addressed using a patch over one eye, special eyeglasses or—in severe cases—surgical correction.

    Conjunctivitis

Conjunctivitis, also known as pinkeye, is a common eye infection caused by bacteria or viruses. The eye will appear reddened, watery, and may feel itchy. Your eye care provider may prescribe drops or medication if needed, but the condition will generally clear up on its own. Pinkeye can be extremely contagious, so make sure that you and your child wash your hands often and regularly to prevent spreading the infection.

    Understanding How the Eye Works

    Last updated 3 months ago

You see the world through your eyes every day, but do you know how they work? The eye functions like a camera, allowing light inside to focus and form an image. When you require eyeglasses or contacts to correct your vision, you are changing where light focuses to create a clearer image.

    How Light Enters the Eye

Light enters the eye through the clear cornea at the front of your eye. The cornea is shaped such that it focuses the light so that it will form an image inside the eye. Just behind the cornea is the pupil and iris, which change size to allow either more or less light inside the eye. When it’s bright outside, your pupil is smaller in order to allow less light to enter. At night, your pupil grows larger to allow more light for better vision.

How Images Are Formed in the Eye

The lens of the eye is a flexible structure that can grow longer, shorter, or wider to focus light once it enters your eye. The light is transmitted through the gel that fills your eyeball, called vitreous, until it is focused into a clear image at the back of your eye. This part of the eye, called the retina, is filled with light-sensing cells and nerves.

How Images Are Transmitted From Eye to Brain

The image that appears on the retina must then be transmitted to the brain. The retina’s cells and nerve endings end at the optic nerve, which is the nerve pathway via which signals are sent to the brain. The images are transformed into electrical impulses, sent to the brain, and interpreted as vision so you can see and interact with the world around you.

Your vision is precious, and once lost it cannot be restored. Keep your vision clear and your eyes healthy by visiting your eye care provider at Hakim Optical regularly.
